Though I don’t do it nearly often enough, one of my favourite ways to unwind after a long day or week, is to pour a glass of tea or wine (depending how LONG the day was), light some candles, and hop into the bathtub. To make the experience even more special, I toss one of these DIY bath bombs into the water. The dried flower petals, fizzy bubbles, essentials oils, and such a welcomed treat! I was so surprised how easy this DIY was, and knew I had to share with you all asap – especially as we get closer to Mother’s Day!
The steps are pretty simple and can actually be a relaxing and creative activity in itself! Plus, you can customize them with the scents you like best by simply flexing the essential oils!
What is in a Bath Bomb?
There are a few ways to make bath bombs. For these DIY Bath Bombs, we used:
- Corn starch
- Citric Acid
- Epsom salt
- Baking Soda
- Coconut oil
- Water
- Essential Oils (optional)
- Silicon mold or small muffin tin
- Assorted dried flower petals
How to Dry Flower Petals for Bath Bombs
For these Bath Bombs, I simply air dried my assorted flowers a couple days before I kew I wanted to make these! I removed petals carefully and discarded the leaves and stems. Then, I transferred them to a baking sheet lined with a dry towel. I let them sit like this, air drying for a couple days in a cooler/shadier spot in my home. Then, when ready to make these bath bombs, I made sure to push the dried flower petals into the molds FIRST, so that they are visible on the top of the bath bomb when they are removed from the mold.
How to Make a Bath Bomb
Making these felt like a fun science experiment! The trick is to mix all the dry ingredients and wet ingredients separately. Then VERY slowly add the wet to dry ingredients, so that the citric acid doesn’t react (that is how you get the fizzing affect!). Then all you do is mix to combine (it feels like wet sand), and fill in your molds. You can find bath bomb molds that are specifically designed for this purpose in stores or online. What was most accessible to us (and most of you) was using a small silicon ice cube tray and a muffin tin. Both worked really great!
