Drum roll please….here comes The Best DIY Mulled Wine! Complete with easy do-it-yourself mulled wine spice kits for gifting, this homemade recipe is incredibly simple to make and always THE most cozy and delicious way to warm up this holiday season.
Nothing screams “holiday cheer” more to me than a cup of steamy mulled wine. Whether curled up by the fire at the cabin, over appetizers on Christmas or shared with friends on New Years, it’s a great drink to serve anytime this winter. If you haven’t made it for yourself before, it is surprisingly easy! Plus I have a tutorial for easy mulled spice satchels, which make SUCH great gifts paired with a bottle of red AND our Mulled Wine Print. Just add a bow and you’re set.
What Is Mulled Wine
Mulled Wine has manyyyyy names. You may know it as glühwein, vino caliente, glögg, vin brulé, vin chaud, or I’m sure a hundred other names, depending on where you are in the world. Mulled wine is a hot drink made with red wine, simmered with various mulling spices. In this recipe I used cloves, cinnamon, star anise and oranges to get that festive flavour you expect!
How To Dry Oranges
Adding dried oranges to these mulled wine spice kits is such a nice touch! They rehydrate in the wine once heated, and add such a great burst of flavour. Dried oranges also make cute decorations around the home, a sweet addition to your holiday gifting or strung up in the tree for Christmas.
- Line baking sheets with parchment and preheat the oven to 200 F
- Thinly slice oranges cross-ways about 1/4 inch thick and lay out on baking sheets (if they are too thin they will start to curl up in oven)
- Bake in the oven for about 5 hours
How To Make Mulled Wine Spice Kits
Give the gift of mulled wine this season! Make these easy spice kits to drop right into your pot and have mulled wine in minutes. Give as a gift with a bottle of wine and our Mulled Wine Print!
You’ll need:
- Cheesecloth
- Cooking Twine
- Whole Cloves
- Dried Orange Slices
- Cinnamon Sticks
- Star Anise
Step 1: Cut a sheet of cheesecloth into small squares (about 5″square)
Step 2: In the middle of each cheesecloth square, add in 10 whole cloves, 6 star anise, 2 cinnamon sticks (broken into smaller pieces), and 2 dried oranges. Pull together and tie tight with a ribbon. Add a dried orange or a cinnamon stick to the outside like I did – it’s so cute! A toothpick works to poke a hole in the dried orange to easily add it to string.
Step 3: When ready to use, toss the cheesecloth spic satchel right into the liquid and let simmer for 15 minutes! Remove before pouring.
