There is so much buzz around this coffee drink that the team and I gave it a whirl for ourselves! Let me tell you, it did not disappoint! This Iced Brown Sugar Oat Milk Shaken Espresso, is sure to be your new favourite summer drink (it’s definitely ours!). I should mention it’s plant-based and tastes like a cinnamon bun, earning it tens across the board!
Iced coffee season is here, and many of are switching up our regular hot cup of jo for something icy and refreshing to start our day. Enter: Iced Coffee. This little brown sugar coffee trend has been selling out Starbucks and breaking social media. We needed to try it out and see what the buzz was all about. I think by the end of this you are going to want to try it for yourself ASAP!
How To Make The Starbucks Copycat Iced Brown Sugar Shaken Espresso
We decided to break this down into a couple easy steps. And by easy I mean VERY easy. Don’t let this fancy long name trick you into thinking its a hard drink to make or that you need to be barista qualified. Far from it! I recognize we are all spending more time at home, so why not try to bring the café to YOU?!
- Make a quick brown sugar syrup
- Grab a mason jar and fill it halfway with ice
- Pour in two shots of espresso or 1/2 cup strong coffee
- Put the lid on the jar and SHAKE (what your mama gave ya) for 30 seconds to a minute
- Open lid and top with oat milk (or other preferred milk)
- Sip and SEIZE your day
Why Is Oat Milk So Popular?
I find oat milk subtly sweet and perfectly smooth especially in my coffee. The type I buy is fortified with vitamins and minerals which I love. It works so well in coffees because it offers a thicker, “creamier” feel than other alternative milks! If you are thinking about choosing something new whether it be for dietary requirements or even environmental impacts, this non-dairy milk substitute is one you should try!

Ingredients
Brown Sugar Syrup*
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 1/4 cup water
- pinch cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla (optional)
For the Coffee
- 2 ounces espresso (or 1/2 cup strong brewed coffee)
- oat milk for topping**
- ice
- mason jar with lid
Instructions
-
Heat a small saucepan on medium heat. Add the brown sugar, water and cinnamon and stir to combine. Once combined, bring to a simmer and leave on low for 3-5 minutes, stirring frequently, until sugar has completely dissolved and syrup has slightly thickened (it will remain quite runny!) Remove from the heat, stir in the vanilla, and set aside.
-
Prepare 2 ounces of espresso, or 1/2 cup strong coffee. Fill a mason jar halfway with ice cubes, then add 1 tablespoon of syrup (or more to taste!), and add the coffee. Cover the jar with the led, and shake for 30 seconds or longer!
-
Enjoy in the mason jar or pour into a new glass and top with oat milk and more ice if desired. Add a dollop of whipped cream or coconut whip and a sprinkle of cinnamon if desired before serving.

Can you use coconut sugar? Thinking it would be a healthier alternative for the simple syrup.

I think you could or maple syrup – I haven’t tried but would love to hear if you do!
