We finally decided to tackle our guest bedroom downstairs for our next renovation project, and I am so happy we did! A fresh coat of paint and a few special touches was all it needed to turn it into the dreamiest space for our guests.
We renovated our home a couple of years ago, and like many couples, hit a total wall and needed a break before we finished every little detail. Heading into fall, I find myself looking for new projects around the house – just like spring (anyone with me?). I’ve always liked our guest bedroom space, but it ended up getting zero love and being the dumping ground for random furniture and extra “things”. I decided to tackle this room for my next DIY project!
Knowing that a fresh coat of paint was exactly what it needed, I was beyond excited to partner with Lowe’s to choose a colour from their SICO paint pallet. I wanted to create a soft yet cozy and inviting space for our guests that was still bright and cheery with the beautiful light that comes into the room from the big picture window.
The Before
Choosing a Paint Colour
Now, choosing a paint colour isn’t as simple as it may seem. I was after a soft neutral colour (no big surprise if you’ve followed me for a while), and the SICO Online Paint Selector Tool made the process a whole lot easier. From the comfort of my home (and stretchy pants), I was able to choose a SICO paint shade that was just right for the space.
We ended up going with Mushroom Mousse (SICO shade 6185-11) in an eggshell finish and I LOVE it! Such a soft, linen-like shade that goes with anything. It’s my new favourite paint colour by a land slide! If you’re looking for a shade that is similar but with a stronger value to give it more contrast simply use Dried Mushrooms (SICO shade 6185-21) which is the same but darker which will give you more contrast.
Choosing the Decor
The Mushroom Mousse shade was literally PERFECT, with the subtle contrast and warmth I was looking for. I realized that I also needed bedside lights for the guest bedroom, but wanted to do something a bit different. I was totally blown away by the Lowe’s home décor selection; check out this link for some incredible lights! We ended up going with a beautiful polished wall-mount set of lights with white shades and a swing arm for reading that I absolutely love. They were so reasonably priced too!
Though we could have hard-wired the lights, I didn’t feel like bringing in the electrician so we decided to use the plug-in feature (love that these lights can go either way). Here’s a little hack for hiding the cord that would otherwise hang down… such a good tip! We used these rounded cord covers and painted them the same shade as the walls. They simply adhere to the wall, and the cord is hidden inside which is so much nicer to look at! Such an inexpensive trick.
I added some soft pink and warm off-white linens (from Lakehouse Home Store) to the space (I love mixing whites, linens and creams) to finish off the space using a few items I happened to have on hand and added a pretty little bedside flower arrangement for our guests to greet them. I joked with Charles that I may have to move downstairs now – this is my new favourite bedroom by a landslide and is a touch feminine which makes my heart go pitter patter, like this Audrey Hepburn print from Lakehouse. I can’t wait to share this space with our next guests.
If you’re looking for your next DIY project in your own home, I highly recommend checking out Lowe’s – they have everything you need to create your own perfect look in any space! What is your next project? Share below!

So pretty- but here’s a DIY tip- use a paint Roller to avoid brush marks. So much faster and easier that using your tiny brush. Just use a slanted brush to cut in the trim and ceiling
