It’s so easy to get stuck in a rut with smoothies … amiright? This Apple Crisp Smoothie will break you out of your routine and tastes like dessert (but will leave your body saying thank you). Make your own applesauce to bring it to the next level – our kids devoured these!
I grew up having apple crisp after Sunday dinner – it was always (and still is) one of my favourite desserts. And what’s not to love? Apples, cinnamon and a crumbly oat topping. I revamped my family recipe in fact to make it less sweet and gluten free if this is your jam too. Just click here for the recipe.
Apples are a staple in our house. Charlie loves them cut up with cinnamon sprinkled on them in his lunch. I also make homemade applesauce whenever we have extra apples kicking around (which is often – I buy them weekly living in the Okanagan) or when apples are starting to soften. It’s such a great way to use up something that may otherwise go in the garbage (food waste drives me nuts!). Here’s my simple recipe!
Now, to be clear, you can use store-bought applesauce for this recipe no problem. But there is just something about homemade applesauce that I simply love, not the least that it makes your home smell UH-MAZING.
This smoothie is filled with soluble fibre thanks to the apples and oats, and gives you a decent serving of protein thanks to the Greek yogurt (you can sub plain Greek yogurt for the vanilla, or of course a dairy-free one). It’s safe to say that most people don’t get enough fibre which helps with digestion and helps reduce cholesterol (beta glucan is a special type of fibre found in oats that plays a role here) … so why not get a kick start to your day?
You can use any type of milk here, at your discretion… I always use unsweetened plant based milk that is fortified with calcium, vitamin D and vitamin B12. There are so many options out there (my personal fav is the unsweetened vanilla ones for smoothies, coffee and cereal). The ice is completely optional but makes it thicker and colder.
I hope this recipe finds its way into your home… and bellies!
