We’re on Day 4 of our 5 Day Smoothie Challenge! By now you are probably so in the groove of making a healthy morning smoothie along with me. Today we are making a delicious fresh Complexion Smoothie loaded with cantaloupe, strawberries & yogurt that are great for the skin. Let’s get right to it!
Cantaloupe is just one of those fruits that sometimes gets forgotten about, you know? Well this smoothie is unforgettable, and the fresh cantaloupe is by far the best part!
Health benefits of cantaloupe
Oh the little humble cantaloupe! This tasty melon is packed with nutrients many people don’t know about. You may want to rethink passing it by at the grocery store!
It’s nutritious, delicious, and really versatile. Cantaloupes are 90% water, so eating cantaloupe helps you stay hydrated throughout the day. One cup of cubed cantaloupe provides 100% of the daily value for vitamin C and is a source of beta carotene (vitamin A precursor), which helps keep your eyes, skin, bones, and immune system healthy.
How to choose & store a cantaloupe
Do you feel lost when you see people knocking, sniffing, feeling up produce?! When shopping for a melon, look for ones with a raised netting pattern. The rind underneath the textured netting can be anywhere from yellow to tan, but a green rind covered by flat netting means the cantaloupe is not ripe yet. Avoid melons with obvious bruising.
Those people sniffing in the grocery store, are doing it right! A ripe melon will be nice and fragrant, and should be firm, but not rock hard. Melons ARE perishable, so for best results, melons fresh from the store (that are ripe) should be refrigerated for five to seven days. Instead, if you buy a cantaloupe that’s not fully ripe yet, it can be stored at room temperature for a few days while it ripens a little further! Tip : When storing a halved melon, leave the seeds in to help keep it fresh!
