If fish comes to mind right off the bat, I’m with you! My favourite way to enjoy this sauce is with Crab Cakes and Salmon Cakes. You could also enjoy it with a baked salmon, on a fish burger like these Salmon Burgers (so good) or even on these Crispy Chicken Sandwiches! Plus, if you have some Crispy Oven Fries on the side, you’ll want to dip them in the tartar sauce I guarantee it!
How Do You Make Tartar Sauce From Scratch?
The marriage between the following ingredients makes for this flavourful tartar sauce :
- Mayo (use vegan to make this a plant based dish)
- Dill pickles
- Red onions
- Fresh lemon juice
- Fresh dill
- Capers
Easy right? Most of us have these ingredients kicking around in our fridges all the time. Next time you go to grab plain mayo for a dish, you may want to whip up some of this instead! You can leave out the capers if you want or don’t have them on hand.

Loved it! Had to use up the dill after making the West Coast Eggs Benny from the cookbook a few days prior and this tartar recipe will now be a staple in our house. My family all used it the next day to mix with hard boiled eggs and couldn’t get over how tasty it was.
