Welcome to Day 2 of the 5 Day Smoothie Challenge! Today is an Apple Pie Smoothie, packed with cozy flavours and just the right hint of cinnamon. What better way to start off your morning with the delicious taste of apple pie?!
Yes, you heard me correctly. This is an apple pie flavoured smoothie! I think the saying goes, an apple smoothie a day keeps the doctor away, right? I love using apple based smoothies not just for the taste, but for all the health benefits. Apples are full of vitamin C, fibre (especially heart-healthy soluble fibre), and a range of other plant nutrients with antioxidant effects (polyphenols). The cinnamon makes this smoothie feel warm and homey! If you like things sweeter, you could also add in a drizzle of honey or a couple pitted dates. But to be honest this smoothie has great natural sweetness all on it’s own!
How to make your own applesauce
Skip the store bought and make your own applesauce if you can! Homemade applesauce is one of the easiest thing on earth to make. Never mind the fact that you can make it with just a couple of ingredients in thirty minutes or less and minimal effort. Applesauce is packed with goodness in every bite (and you can freeze it!). Here’s my quick and easy recipe! See below for some options if you don’t have applesauce.
What milk should I use for a smoothie?
The beauty of smoothies is they have so much flexibility! You can adapt this recipe to meet your own dietary needs, and use your regular milk of choice or swap it out for milk substitutes and dairy-free options. I love using oat milk (in this smoothie it would make it taste EVEN MORE like yummy apple pie) or almond milk. But in many recipes, coconut water or coconut milk also are great options and offer up different flavour. If you are new to smoothie making, experiment and find what you enjoy best! Look for a fortified milk (calcium and vitamin D) whenever possible.
How to make a smoothie bowl
This Apple Pie Smoothie would be phenomenal as a bowl! Simply make it as per the instructions, use a little less liquid, and pour into your bowl instead of smoothie cup. Top with sliced apples, dried fruits, nuts, and some granola or oats. It’s a fun way to enjoy a smoothie in a different way! See my Orange Creamsicle Smoothie Bowl or Pumpkin Pie Smoothie Bowl for inspiration!
Substitutions & additions for this smoothie
If you don’t have apples at your fingertips you can use pear puree in a pinch, or simply throw in diced fresh pear or apple (cored but skin can be left on). To make it lower in sugar simply skip the apple juice and use plain yogurt and be sure to use unsweetened apple sauce.
I love adding a couple tablespoons of oats and pecans to this smoothie too – you can experiment with these types of add-ins. Hemp hearts work really well too and blend in so well you don’t even know they are there! You could add a tablespoon of almond butter to add more protein too.

Love it! I love smoothies that don’t have bananas in them yay! I have also found some coconut yogurt, now I’m hunting for non dairy kefir.
Amazing! Let me know if you find any!
Check out Kefirkult, it is a Toronto based company, not sure how widely it is available. I love it and it thickens into a yogurt like consistency as it sits in the fridge.
