Our Home for the Holidays

November 20, 2020

Christmas stockings on the mantle

Staying home for the holidays is taking on a new meaning this year. I decorated early to bring a bit more joy into our lives at this crazy time!  I’m sharing all the little spaces that we decorated for the season to make our home feel cozy and festive … grab a cup of coffee and come on in!

My mom was one of those people who had multiple Christmas trees up every year (5 to be exact one year). She always had her special pretty tree that she decorated long after we went to bed and then of course we had our own tree to decorate as kids that was full of colour and old fashioned ornaments from our childhood. Decorating the tree was, and remains, one of my all-time favourite things to do during the holiday season.

I wanted to give the boys a special little Christmas treat and decorated their rooms with a bit of a holiday touch.  I want them to have that same magical feel about Christmas that I did growing up!  Their rooms are at the end, I really love how they turned out.

Grab a cup of coffee and scroll down for a holiday tour of our home.

Wishing you all the most amazing holiday season ever filled with love and joy and everything that makes your hearts sing.

xo

Our Entry Way

Our console table is the first thing that you see when you walk in our front door so I always make the effort to dress it up!  The mirror was an investment, but it is perfect for the space and we added in a basket, some vintage boxes, and other accessories (the Nutcracker is an old one from Homesense).  The flooring is Shaw Castlewood Oak and the library moulding is from Metrie – I love them both and if you are renovating or building, I highly recommend!  The moulding adds a lot of dimension and interest to a space. We added a few pieces of art from our new Fraîche Digital Print Collection (on sale BOGO 50% off until Sunday) that makes it feel that much more festive!

Living Room

We have a very open living space, and though it took some time I love how we have configured it and how cozy it is!  I can’t believe that we actually contemplated not having a fireplace: we went with a Dreamcast Design mantle and it completely anchors our home …. and of course provides us with a sweet little place to hang stockings for Santa (ours were hand knit by a family friend)!  The couches and striped chairs are slip covered and sooo awesome – they are from CF Interiors (linked here).  The rug is linked here (comes in so many different colours and patterns and is really good quality).

We placed our tree in the centre of the space this year and I’m loving it!  Woven with gold ribbon, twinkle lights and sparkly ornaments… and of course Max’s favourite (DIY gingerbread ornaments!).

Kitchen

We didn’t do too much in the kitchen, but used the 3M hangers to hang a small faux wreath above the range and added in a little bit of artwork from our new Fraîche Digital Prints I found lot of the antiques in my kitchen and home at Taylor’s Antiques in Kelowna if you are ever in town – say hi to Mark for me!

Charlie’s Room

I LOVE decorating the boys’ rooms!  I have had this little tree that I put in Charlie’s room since my university days (I was such a nerd, I even had a tree in my dorm room – in fact, I bought it with my own money when I was in grade 6!).  The light is linked here and the black and white plaid wallpaper is linked here if you’re looking for something similar, and the drapes were from Q Design Centre (custom).  His bed is so cool, and  the deer head, festive bedding and the side tables are all from Homesense.  The panelling is from Metrie too.

Max’s Room

I love hanging out in Max’s room. It is cozy but clean and crisp at the same time, and I LOVE that we used navy curtains in his room (from Q Design Centre as well).  It completed the room. The whale is from Homesense along with the little tree pictured above… and the chair. My mom made me that teddy bear when I was a little girl, how sweet that I get to hand it over to my boys!

Home for the Holidays

Exterior

We layered all kinds of evergreen trees in front of our home thanks to our friends at Better Earth Garden Centre and it looked so cozy – these planters are a dream and available for special order if you give them a shout! The front door was from Home Depot (special order) and we used Hardy shakes painted in Benjamin Moore Sea Haze at 50%. The door hardware is from Emtek.

Hi Tori, Love your cookbook and reading your posts. I’m just wondering where you bought Charlie’s bed sheets. I have quite a few of the truck with Christmas tree on top motif in our house. Thank you.

Priorities. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I’ve been thinking about them a lot these last few days. I’ve been reading the book ‘Untamed’ by @glennondoyle (have you read it? love to hear your thoughts), and it’s made me really think. It made me think about my childhood, my relationships (including the one with myself) and what I want to put out to the world in the short time I have here. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
My last post was sharing our story of my dad’s journey with Alzheimer’s. We are so lucky to have him at such an early stage of the disease, fully himself. He is such a gift to us and the world. In sharing this story a floodgate of touching yet heart-wrenching stories poured in. My heart expanded and broke at the same time. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Jillian posted something about high functioning anxiety the other day, and I checked most (ok all) of those boxes ... ugh. The irony is that I live a lot in the future, a little busy body, not really taking the time to enjoy the present - but one day, should I have the same disease as my dad (50% chance), I will truly only have the capacity to live in that moment. It stopped me dead in my tracks. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
As I wade into 2021 I am doing my best to realign my life to match my priorities - perfect balance isn’t what I’m after, that’s nonsense as far as I’m concerned.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Travels with this crew... 🤍
My parents & Jillian’s (our moms are sisters) have always travelled together and have had THE MOST incredible adventures (our dads are ridiculously witty - literally the funniest humans). Looking back I can guarantee that those are some of their best memories.
I’m so grateful that we got to do the same last year - I can’t wait for another trip! And might I say that I wish I was eating my lunch in this spot today! Thank you again @nimmobayresort

I don’t do resolutions but love having a word to guide my year - I’m having a hard time picking just one this year. I think I got this idea from my friend @jenniferwilson.co ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
While being focussed and more organized is always on my list, they don’t really seem to feel right. With the boys growing so quickly and the reality of aging sinking in, especially with my dad having Alzheimer’s, I feel that time has never been more precious. I’m always finding myself trying to fit one more chore in or sneak in that extra email ... but really, why? This will be the year of more snuggles for me, more campfires, glasses of wine with my loved ones over good food ... more memories. I worry that one day soon Charlie won’t want to snuggle me and it breaks my heart.

I took a break from being on IG stories over the holidays and it was such a gift - I love being on the platform but there sure is a balance between being ‘on’ and being present. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

I think this year my word will be FAMILY ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
What would your ONE word be this year??
