Our Lakeview Deck Reveal!

June 27, 2018

Tori Wesszer's Cape Cod-inspired deck reveal

We’ve been waiting for our deck to be finished for AGES and are beyond excited that it’s finally ready for us to enjoy!  I am so in love with this space, I wanted to take you on a tour (the first of our home tour!) to show you how we set it up and what we chose for our furniture… AND FRIENDS,  IT’S ALL ON SALE RIGHT NOW, START THE CAR!!!

I live for these perfect long summer days in the Okanagan; it takes me right back to my childhood.  In fact, I can see my parent’s house from where I’m sitting (on our new lounger, I nearly slept out here it’s so comfy) while I write this post.  They live 7 minutes away by foot, which we walk to through the world’s most gorgeous vineyards.  I feel incredibly lucky to live so close to them, they are my everything.

Living in Kelowna, we spend nearly all of our time outdoors in the summer and of course, cooking and entertaining is a big deal to us!  We wanted to create a warm inviting space that was also super comfortable to sit in for hours to soak up the lakeview, sip some good wine and spend time with our favourite people.

Charles designed the deck to be large, covered and essentially function as an extension of our interior living area; we were thrilled to partner with Canadian Tire to create our dream space!  We set up a lounge area and chose the CANVAS Tofino Collection: it’s literally perfect!  Our house is a traditional/cape cod style and this collection fits it to a ‘T’.  The clean simple lines, classic off-white cushions with a subtle stripe detail (that are reversible, the other side has no stripes), and the lower profile so that our view isn’t compromised make it a great fit for our space.   The set is also customizable, so you can configure it however you want (couch, sectional or even a u-shaped sectional for ultimate entertaining… we’re considering adding on to make it this shape as we have so many people over in the summer!).  The CANVAS Tofino coffee table that matches the set has a section for storage underneath that can be used to store blankets, books (cookbooks for me lol)… whatever you need!

We dressed up the space with tons of cool patio accessories from Canadian Tire.  We found some incredible classic urn planters at such a reasonable price and since we weren’t in the mood for planting, we bought two white hanging baskets from Canadian Tire, cut off the hangers, and stuck them in the planters for a no-hassle beautiful, lush planter.  Instant gratification…. totally up my alley!  Since my thumb isn’t always as green as I would like it to be, we picked up a couple of silk topiary trees from Canadian Tire, put them in some simple black planters, and filled it with dirt to make it look real – these trees don’t fade for the record!  The wood lanterns (they come with battery operated candles) completed the coastal vibe.

We wanted the dining set to compliment the lounge set, and the CANVAS Monaco Dining Set was a perfect fit.  We entertain A LOT, and wanted a set that would stand the test of time (and my kids lol), not fade, and not need upkeep such as re-staining.  The CANVAS Monaco Faux Wood Tabletop Dining Table checked all our boxes.  It has a simple design that compliments the lounge set, wipes down easily and has all the warmth of a wood table but requires zero maintenance.  The CANVAS Monaco Wicker Patio Dining Chairs really compliment the patio table, are really solid and have a comfortable stone-coloured cushion that easily wipes clean to make them super comfortable. We dressed up the table with some gorgeous metal lanterns and found some awesome white dinnerware and classic cutlery along with some marble cutting boards and clear stemless plastic wine glasses for entertaining our guests.  The CANVAS Backyard Mason Jar Dispenser is a huge hit, we fill it with ice and distilled water along with whatever fruit we have on hand to make it look pretty and taste amazing.  The pretty ‘Charlotte’ tumblers are so awesome for serving up cocktails and I’m crushing on these galvanized nautical metal trays for serving it all up.

There are so many things that I love about this furniture, but I must say as a mom of two busy boys, I’m a big fan of the fact that all of the CANVAS cushions are designed with Tripel technology to repel stains, water and prevent fading.  They are SO well made (read: don’t fall apart after a year like some of the sets I’ve had in the past) and the price point is completely approachable.

We’re so excited to kick back and relax in our new outdoor living space, thank you for following along on our crazy renovation journey!

Tori

I noticed you said this is the FIRST post of your home tour! I was wondering if you ever plan on sharing the layout of your home? We are going to be building in the next few years and I love hearing about people’s layouts – what they wish they had, and what they can’t live without! AKA the GOOD, the BAD and the UGLY!

Your deck is absolutely beautiful! Love your blog and following you on Instagram!

Hi Chelsey! That’s a great question I will see if my hubby can make that happen! I would be happy to share what we would do differently too when I get myself organized and the final home tour is ready to go!
Take care and good luck with getting ready for the build you are smart to start so early!

I was wondering what specific pieces you bought to make the sectional as I noticed they are sold in smaller pieces/ sections.

Great question! I bought 3 of the corner pieces and two of the middle pieces! I may even extend it as a U shape… They are super easy to modify!

This is gorgeous! We are starting a similar project on our home in August. What materials did you use for the ceiling? Wood or vinyl? We are torn! Love the look of wood, but I know vinyl is more sensible.

I love how you stuck the hanging plant and the faux topiary in planters! Great idea! I also don’t have a green thumb either! Love how you put everything together. Canadian Tire should use your photos in their advertising…your family is so photogenic!

Hi! I was wondering what white paint color you used on the railings and also what type/color of flooring you used?

    Thank you!

Hi Kristen! The railings and decking are both Trex: we didn’t paint either of them they came this way (which is awesome as there is zero maintenance!)

    Hello!
Looking into purchasing the same outdoor sectional from Canadian tire. Are the cushions easy to clean? We Would have the sectional outside under a pergola. Also wondering if the frame could be kept out for the winter? ( not sure where we would store it otherwise haha)

      Hi Candace!

The covers do come off, they are a bit tight so it’s a two person job but I hand washed a couple and they came out perfect. I will be storing our frame out on the deck all year long!

      Take care!

Hi Tori! Did you take the covers off to hand wash or just spot clean with the covers on? I have the same set & it’s got muddy cat prints all over it!

Hi Kayte! I washed them with the covers off in the washer on gentle but some of them are a bit delicate – hang to dry for sure!

    Hello Tori,
I would love to see what is on each side your BBQ. It looks like an outdoor fridge?
    Thanks,

Do you have any favourite grey or black conversation sets? I love the Tofino, but I have charcoal siding and will be doing a deck white silver travertine.

Hi Tori – I love your outdoor living space! We recently bought the Tofino collection from Canadian Tire and have been spending every waking minute on our patio ever since 🙂 I’m just wondering if you were able to find a cover that fit the sectional? All of the ones I’ve seen on Canadian Tire’s website don’t seem to be the right dimensions. Thank you in advance!

Priorities. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I’ve been thinking about them a lot these last few days. I’ve been reading the book ‘Untamed’ by @glennondoyle (have you read it? love to hear your thoughts), and it’s made me really think. It made me think about my childhood, my relationships (including the one with myself) and what I want to put out to the world in the short time I have here. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
My last post was sharing our story of my dad’s journey with Alzheimer’s. We are so lucky to have him at such an early stage of the disease, fully himself. He is such a gift to us and the world. In sharing this story a floodgate of touching yet heart-wrenching stories poured in. My heart expanded and broke at the same time. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Jillian posted something about high functioning anxiety the other day, and I checked most (ok all) of those boxes ... ugh. The irony is that I live a lot in the future, a little busy body, not really taking the time to enjoy the present - but one day, should I have the same disease as my dad (50% chance), I will truly only have the capacity to live in that moment. It stopped me dead in my tracks. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
As I wade into 2021 I am doing my best to realign my life to match my priorities - perfect balance isn’t what I’m after, that’s nonsense as far as I’m concerned.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

My parents & Jillian’s (our moms are sisters) have always travelled together and have had THE MOST incredible adventures (our dads are ridiculously witty - literally the funniest humans). Looking back I can guarantee that those are some of their best memories.
I’m so grateful that we got to do the same last year - I can’t wait for another trip! And might I say that I wish I was eating my lunch in this spot today! Thank you again @nimmobayresort

I don’t do resolutions but love having a word to guide my year - I’m having a hard time picking just one this year. I think I got this idea from my friend @jenniferwilson.co ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
While being focussed and more organized is always on my list, they don’t really seem to feel right. With the boys growing so quickly and the reality of aging sinking in, especially with my dad having Alzheimer’s, I feel that time has never been more precious. I’m always finding myself trying to fit one more chore in or sneak in that extra email ... but really, why? This will be the year of more snuggles for me, more campfires, glasses of wine with my loved ones over good food ... more memories. I worry that one day soon Charlie won’t want to snuggle me and it breaks my heart.

I took a break from being on IG stories over the holidays and it was such a gift - I love being on the platform but there sure is a balance between being ‘on’ and being present. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

I think this year my word will be FAMILY ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
What would your ONE word be this year??
