Who knew it was this easy to make a flavourful version of a poke bowl at home?! This easy Earl’s-inspired Tuna Poke Bowl recipe features sushi-grade ahi tuna with an epic marinade, juicy mangos, avocado, edamame, and an addicting spicy mayo!
What is a Poke Bowl?
So what is a poke bowl anyway? First off, it is pronounced “poh-keh” it is not “poke” (like what my kids do to get my attention). Poke means “to slice or cut” in Hawaiian and refers to chunks of raw, marinated fish which is then tossed over rice, with diverse toppings and flavourful sauces.
Jump to RecipeWhat Does “Sushi Grade” Fish Mean?
Do NOT use just any type of fish for this recipe! I repeat! You will need sushi grade fish. ‘Sushi-grade’ fish is the term given to fish that shows it is safe to prepare and eat raw. The fish is caught quickly and flash frozen. The proper steps work to kill parasites making the raw fish safe for consumption. I always get mine from my trusty local fish shop – who typically has ahi- tuna (my favourite!). Keep it in the fridge prior to enjoying, and don’t let it sit out too long. Poke bowls are meant to be eaten slightly chilled.
What Do You Put in a Poke Bowl?
- Start with a base : We went for a classic jasmine rice base, but you could use brown rice, sushi rice, noodles or even greens.
- Add a protein : Marinated Ahi Tuna was our choice! But other favourite are salmon, crab, shrimp or tofu.
- Get creative with toppings! Items like cucumbers, edamame, nori, seaweed salad, radishes, picked ginger, pickled red onions, scallions, sesame seeds, diced tropical fruit, or even wasabi peas ALL work great here! We loved the addition of spicy mayo on top too.

This little hack is much easier than it looks! Turn a simple avocado on top of any dish, into a show stopper!

Would tofu work with this same marinade in place of the tuna ?
Tori W. says
Hey! I haven’t tried this but I imagine it would, just marinate it for much longer than the fish. 30 minutes plus!
Jennifer says
Is it 2 teaspoons of sriracha? 2 tablespoons makes it QUITE spicy!!!!
Tori W. says
Hey Jennifer! I will make an edit to put a range instead, so it isn’t too spicy!! xx Tori
