Comfort food is the name of the game these days and these garlic cheddar cheese biscuits act like a big warm hug. Serve them up with your next batch of soup, stew, or enjoy solo anytime of the day!
Secrets To A Great Cheddar Biscuit
Some secrets of mine for a GREAT biscuit are: the butter needs to be super cold, you can’t over-handle the dough, and you need a great cheese to make these biscuits stand out! I used the Canadian-made Balderson 5 Year Old Cheddar for the sharp rich taste, but something similar will work just fine of course.
What To Serve with Biscuits
There is nothing quite like using a fresh biscuit to soak up some delicious broth. These would go so great with some of my favourite soups like my Roasted Tomato Pepper Soup ,Corn Chowder or a creamy Potato Broccoli Soup!
These would also be a real crowd pleaser as a bread replacement at breakfast for an egg sandwich (drool). But of course, the flavours are so great in these, I even enjoy them solo as a snack with warm garlic butter on top and a cup of tea. I also have a classic light and fluffy biscuit recipe here!
Cheddar Garlic Biscuits
Cheddar Garlic Biscuits
These garlic cheddar biscuits with aged cheese are the perfect and comforting companion to your next batch of soup!
Ingredients
- 2 cups flour
- 4 teaspoons baking powder
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup cold butter, diced
- 2 tablespoons finely chopped chives
- 1 cup grated aged cheddar
- 1 egg
- 1/2-3/4 cup milk
- garlic butter to brush on (optional)
Instructions
-
Preheat the oven to 450 F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
-
In a large bowl whisk together the flour, baking powder, garlic powder and salt. Add the butter and using your fingers or a pastry blender, break the butter to the size of peas. Add the chives and cheese and mix together.
-
In a measuring glass, whisk the egg and add milk to reach the ¾ mark. Add the milk mixture to the flour and mix just to combine (will be crumbly). Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface, pat together into a 1” circle and cut into shapes with a round biscuit cutter (or cut into wedges with a sharp knife). Place on the prepared baking sheet and bake until golden brown, around 12 minutes.
-
Brush with garlic butter if desired (2 tablespoons of melted butter with ½ clove crushed garlic) and serve warm out of the oven.

Lynda says
These look so good. Can 3/4 cup buttermilk be used instead of the egg & milk?
Tori Wesszer says
Hi Lynda I have been able to omit the egg successfully using this method – I typically add a bit more baking powder (1 teaspoon more). I hope it works for you!

Made these today, and they were delicious! Could you make this recipe into dessert biscuits? With fruit? Let me know!!
Tori W. says
Hey Alex! You could omit the cheddar and garlic if you wished or try my Strawberry Shortcake Recipe here!
Alison Smyth says
Made them tonight, delicious. We have leftovers, there are only 2 of us. Can I freeze them and, if so, what would be the best way to warm them up
Tori W. says
Hey Alison! Basically, I try to freeze whatever I can to limit any waste so I say go for it! To reheat, soften in the microwave or bake at 350 F until warm throughout (could add a little butter to them too to keep them moist). xx Tori
