Summer ‘Superfood’ Spritzers

June 15, 2018

Superfood Summer Spritzers that are great for the gut!

Staying hydrated during the summer months doesn’t have to be a chore!  Spritzers are one of my favourite ways to keep refreshed; they are a low calorie and delicious way to get more fluids and allow for so much creativity!  And while you’re at it, why not up your mocktail game with the addition of some ‘superfood’ so that your body REALLY says ‘thank you’!?

I partnered with Genuine Health to bring you two ridiculously delicious summer mocktails made with their fermented organic gut superfoods+ that help feed your guts with the good stuff!  You can mix these powders into water but these recipes really take them to a new level!

Superfood Summer Spritzers from Registered Dietitian Tori Wesszer of Fraiche Nutrition

The importance of the microorganisms in our guts is becoming more and more evident as research in this area expands on the daily.  While we once thought that bugs were just a nuisance, we are beginning to understand and appreciate just how important our microbiome (which is the collection of these ‘bugs’, which is mostly bacteria, in our system) really is!  We have 10 times more bacteria cells in and on our bodies than we do human cells which is really incredible!  The majority of these bacteria are located in our intestines: the further ‘down’ the pipe you move the more bacteria you will find. Your microbiome is as unique as your fingerprint; here are a few ways that our microbiome influences our health:

  • modulating our immune system and inflammation
  • enhance the bioavailability and uptake of minerals, including calcium, magnesium, and possibly iron
  • mental health (your gut is packed with nerve endings that communicate with your brain, and our gut bacteria appear to play a role in modulating our mental health)
  • improve digestive health
  • may help influence weight loss

I personally take any chance I can to help those good guys out!  You can feed the good bacteria by consuming probiotics (the good bugs themselves) or prebiotics (the food for the good bugs that helps them multiply and do good in your gut), such as those found in the Genuine Health fermented organic gut superfoods+.  I wrote an article on gut health and prebiotics last year here which contains a list of foods that contain prebiotics if you’re interested!

These mocktails come together in a breeze; all you need is a shaker or a re-sealable container, some ice and a few simple ingredients including the Genuine Health fermented organic gut superfoods+.  The product is made from 21 organic plant-based superfoods plus an easy-to-tolerate source of prebiotic fibre and is fully fermented to help improve digestion.

Each recipe makes one serving

Orange Ginger Mule

  • ½ scoop orange ginger fermented organic gut superfoods+
  • ice
  • 3 oz water
  • 5 oz ginger kombucha
  • ½ fresh orange
  • orange peel twist*

*to make the orange peel twist, peel a long thin layer of orange peel off of a fresh orange using a vegetable peeler and twist it before usinga as a garnish

  1. Combine the orange ginger fermented organic gut superfoods+, ice and water in a resealable shaker or mason jar, close the lid tightly and shake until the powder is dissolved.
  2. Empty the mixture (including the ice) into a tall glass, squeeze in the juice of the orange half and top with the ginger kombucha. Garnish with the orange peel twist and serve!

Superfood Summer Spritzers that are great for the gut!

Summer Berry Pomegranate Spritzer

  • 4 fresh basil leaves, roughly chopped plus an extra leaf for garnish
  • ¼ cup fresh blackberries plus extra for garnish
  • ½ scoop summer berry pomegranate fermented organic gut superfoods+
  • 3 oz water
  • Ice
  • Sparkling water

  1. Muddle the chopped basil and blackberries in the bottom of a glass.
  2. Combine the summer berry pomegranate fermented organic gut superfoods+, ice and water in a resealable shaker or mason jar, close the lid tightly and shake until the powder is dissolved.
  3. Empty the mixture (including the ice) into the glass, top with the sparkling water and garnish with the extra blackberries and basil.

Wow Tori, your timing couldn’t be better! I have the Summer Berry Pomegranate and have been having a hard time stomaching it with straight water – these recipes are a great way to get the good stuff and having it taste great at the same time! My tummy thanks you 🙂

I ordered this product unflavored and unsweetened from Amazon. Got it today and there is a label affixed to the can. It says “WARNING: This product contains chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer and birth defects or other reproductive harm.” Maybe you should check it out. I will also.

Priorities. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Thinking about them a lot these last few days. I’ve been reading the book ‘Untamed’ by @glennondoyle (have you read it? love to hear your thoughts), and it’s made me really think. It made me think about my childhood, my relationships (including the one with myself) and what I want to put out to the world in the short time I have here. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
My last post was sharing our story of my dad’s journey with Alzheimer’s. We are so lucky to have him at such an early stage of the disease, fully himself. He is such a gift to us and the world. In sharing this story a floodgate of touching yet heart-wrenching stories poured in. My heart expanded and broke at the same time. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Jillian posted something about high functioning anxiety the other day, and I checked most (ok all) of those boxes ... ugh. The irony is that I live a lot in the future, a little busy body, not really taking the time to enjoy the present - but one day, should I have the same disease as my dad (50% chance), I will truly only have the capacity to live in that moment. It stopped me dead in my tracks. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
As I wade into 2021 I am doing my best to realign my life to match my priorities - perfect balance isn’t what I’m after, that’s nonsense as far as I’m concerned.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

A little deep for a Tuesday but that’s where my brain is at today! Sending love ... as always. ❤️

Without a doubt the most difficult blog post I have ever written. My sweet incredible funny kind loving dad was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, a diagnosis that tore my heart in two. This is our story. The post is on the blog FraicheLiving.com

January is Alzheimer’s Awareness Month. Sending you all love, especially those who have been impacted by this disease.

We remain hopeful, and are reminded on the daily to not take life for granted. ❤️

Travels with this crew... 🤍
My parents & Jillian’s (our moms are sisters) have always travelled together and have had THE MOST incredible adventures (our dads are ridiculously witty - literally the funniest humans). Looking back I can guarantee that those are some of their best memories.
I’m so grateful that we got to do the same last year - I can’t wait for another trip! And might I say that I wish I was eating my lunch in this spot today! Thank you again @nimmobayresort

I don’t do resolutions but love having a word to guide my year - I’m having a hard time picking just one this year. I think I got this idea from my friend @jenniferwilson.co ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
While being focussed and more organized is always on my list, they don’t really seem to feel right. With the boys growing so quickly and the reality of aging sinking in, especially with my dad having Alzheimer’s, I feel that time has never been more precious. I’m always finding myself trying to fit one more chore in or sneak in that extra email ... but really, why? This will be the year of more snuggles for me, more campfires, glasses of wine with my loved ones over good food ... more memories. I worry that one day soon Charlie won’t want to snuggle me and it breaks my heart.

I took a break from being on IG stories over the holidays and it was such a gift - I love being on the platform but there sure is a balance between being ‘on’ and being present. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

I think this year my word will be FAMILY ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
What would your ONE word be this year??
